EnergyLogic and Black Gold heaters and boilers must be serviced annually or every 1,000 running hours, whichever comes first. The nozzle line assembly is cleaned once a year, or sooner if the nozzle blocks with debris. Ash removal and blower wheel cleaning fall on an 800 to 1,000 hour cycle. Annual maintenance kits bundle the nozzle with the preheater, drip cap, burner and solenoid gaskets and o-rings, plus the fuel and air compressor filters, so one part number covers the yearly service.
The UL listed approved fuels are used crankcase oil, used automatic transmission fluid, and ASTM D396 No. 2 fuel oil (#2 diesel). Hydraulic fluid up to 90wt, gear oil up to 90wt, heating oil, and diesel are also known to burn well. Every fuel mixture must fall between a 140F (60C) minimum and roughly a 400F (204C) maximum flash point, and flash point information is on the MSDS for the product in question. Note that USED crankcase oil is specified - unused crankcase oil will not burn.
Never add new motor oil, gasoline, hazardous waste, anti-freeze, carburetor cleaner, paint thinner, any chlorinated material, parts washer solvents, oil additives, or animal fats. The manual is explicit: the addition of inappropriate substances to the fuel is not approved and can lead to poor equipment performance, premature product failure, and/or explosive and hazardous conditions. Burning fuels that contain unapproved substances voids both the product warranty and the UL listing.
Measure the cad cell across the F terminals on the primary control with a meter set to the 100 ohm or 1K ohm range. It should read 30K ohms or higher in the dark and below 1600 ohms in light; if it does not, the cell is bad. With the flame on, an acceptable reading for a new burner and heat exchanger is greater than 0 and up to about 500 ohms, and with no flame it should read greater than 5000 ohms. Parts of burner testing energize 120 VAC components, so only a qualified technician should perform these procedures.
A burner that trips into thermal lockout while it is actually burning usually has a dirty or failed cad cell, because a dirty photo receptor effectively hides the flame from the controller. The normal flame sensing range is less than 1600 ohms; above that the controller concludes there is no flame and stops the burner as a safety precaution. Confirm the flame through the peep hole first, then clean the lens with a soft cloth and light pressure - never use solvents on the lens - and check the yellow leads for cuts and the housing for melted plastic or soot.
For a bright yellow to white flame the service guide calls for fuel pump pressure of 5 to 10 psi, suction of 0 to 8 inches, and air compressor output of 8 to 12 psi. These burners operate on volume rather than pressure, so a healthy machine can read as low as 1 psi. A gauge sitting in the 60s means something above the pump is plugged: check the solenoid valve and the preheater before you pull the nozzle block assembly apart.
Set the electrode gap to 3/32 in. (2.4 mm) with the tips 1/16 in. (1.6 mm) behind the nozzle cap, and the electrode wires 7/16 in. (11 mm) from nozzle center. The nozzle should protrude past the retention head vanes by about 1/16 to 1/8 in. (1.5 to 3 mm), and the retention head sits recessed 1/16 to 1/8 in. (1.5 to 3 mm) into the air tube, centered. The same settings apply to both the double bend and single bend electrode designs. An off-center retention head is the most common cause of burn chamber damage.
The heater needs a dedicated, hard-wired 115 VAC / 60 Hz circuit with a 25 amp maximum circuit breaker, using copper conductors only. The main connection uses white, black, and green conductors at NEC size 12 AWG into a junction box near the cabinet; the fuel pump runs on white, orange, and green conductors at NEC size 14 AWG in flexible metal conduit. Wiring must follow the NEC and local codes, or the Canadian Electrical Code Part I in Canada.
The red T-T terminals carry the thermostat signal, so jumpering across them simulates a closed thermostat and calls for heat. The yellow F-F terminals carry the cad cell signal, so jumpering across F-F simulates a flame and bypasses the pump shutdown protection. Never leave T and F jumped during normal operation: doing so can deposit excessive oil in the combustion chamber and create a fire or explosion hazard. If oil is being sprayed but not burned, do not leave them jumped for more than 30 seconds.
Furnace and heater mean the same thing: a forced-air unit that blows warm air into the shop. A boiler is an ASME-certified water-cooled vessel that heats water instead, up to 230F at 30 psi in low pressure service, which lets it feed radiant floors, ice melt, car wash, and domestic hot water coils. Furnaces move roughly 1,000 to 2,600 CFM with a 100 to 120F heat rise through a 15 in. x 15 in. warm air outlet. Boiler models EL-200B, EL-375B, and EL-500B carry 30, 43, and 52 gallon vessels.
